When the male couple enters 70th year, Bhima Ratha Shanthi 70th Birthday Pooja is performed by the
family members and they celebrate it by getting together and performing the Ayul Shanthi Homams,
Kalasa abhishekam followed by the exchange of garlands for the couple to get the blessings of the Lord.
This is also called as Ayul Shanthi Homam as the ceremony
improves the life longevity of the couple and gives them the strength and
good health. This gives the couple a boost in their spiritual progress, washing
away their past sins and Bad karmas.
On this day all the relatives and friends of the couple gather at a function hall or at a temple or
even at their home and witness the ceremony which consists of a family deity pooja followed by 9 homas
including Ganapathy, Lakshmi, Amurtha Mrityunjeyar, Ayush, Danvantri etc and then Kalasabhishekam will
take place after which the couples exchange the garlands.
The Mrityunjayadevata Kalasa Sthapanam and Pratima Sthapanam form an essential part,
while archanais are also performed during the Bhimaratha Shanthi in the kalyana mandapam. The Kalasa Sthapanam
procedure can vary from one place to another, the only difference is the number of kalashas used, it can be
60, 33 or 12. After completing Kalasa Sthapanam, Shodasa Upacharam, Poojas are continued by chanting the Vedic
mantras to invoke our deities.
Worshipping Gowri or Durga Devi and Lord Vishnu is an significant part of Bhimaratha Shanthi.
This ritual is called as Paratpara Puja. Prayers and pujas to Samvathsara devas- the gods of the sixty years,
the Nakshathra devas- the gods for all the stars, Thithi Devas- the gods for the phases of the moon and
Dikpalakas - the gods for the eight cardinal directions. These deities are invoked in the Mandalam or Kumbhams.
Various Vedic mantras are chanted including Varuna Sookhtha, Purusha Sooktha, Nakshatra Sookhta and Dik Palaka
Mantras are performed and will be conclude with Dosha Shaanthi.
Mangala Snanam which means divine bath, it performed on the couple in kalyana mandapam using 11 diraviyams,
that are Gorochanam, , Ghee, Curd, Cow’s Milk, Durva grass, Fruits, Mirror, Deepam, Flowers, Mud, Gold.
Managala snanam is conducted to get long and healthy life with courage, knowledge, wealth and beauty.
Mangala Snanam is continued by the Kalasa Abhisekham in verandah of the kalyana mandapam on the couple by
elderly people who are elder than the Bhimaratha Shanthi couple. The clothes used by couple in the ceremony
is given to purohidhars as charity.
The Homas can be performed in kalyana mandapam,so the homas included in the Bhimaratha Shanthi ritual are Ayush
Homam, Navagraha, Dhavantri, Maha Mruthyunjaya.
